Many of us feel blessed to have a diet soda as a dessert when we are counting calories or avoiding sweets and carbs, but according to a new study diet sodas may disrupt body`s ability to count the calories.
Professor Terry Davidson and associate professor Susan Swithers, both in the Department of Psychological Science discovered that grabbing a diet soda instead of sugar packed regular drink isn’t the answer to limit the calories, they suggest that regular exercise and healthy food choices are the best way to beat the bulge.
The prude`s researcher`s study A Pavlovian Approach to the Problem of Obesity,” appeared in the July issue of International Journal of Obesity.reasearch ,it suggests that
being able to automatically match caloric intake with caloric need depends on the body’s ability to learn that the taste and feel of food by the mouth suggests the appropriate caloric intake. Much as Pavlov’s dogs learned that the sound of a bell signaled food, people learn that both sweet tastes and dense, viscous foods signal high calories. This learning process begins very early in life and perhaps without conscious awareness.
Davidson and Swithers did an experiment on rats and it indicated that after a while the body’s ability to count the calories were was reduced as a result when rats were given sweets they ate more sweet as compared to the rats that were not given any artificial sweetener earlier ,because their body couldn’t estimate the amount of calorie intake and satiation point.
Though artificial sweetener isn’t the the only cause of obesity but it can be major factor.
